This is the portico used as ballast in the 1600s the Dutch-owned, Batavia, that was shipwrecked off Western Australia. More than 100 people died in the grounding but what befell the survivors was sheer horror – anarchy, tyranny, madness, murder and rape, in a reign of terror where people were picked off one-by-one. In the end, only about a third of the 340 passengers and crew would live.

A bronze statue of a mother and child stands in the middle of the pool. Sculptor Margaret Priest designed it, and the park unveiled it in 1968.The memorial honors the women who helped build and shape early Western Australia.
