Hillcrest Hall was built about 1910 as a home for the Leadbetter family in the southwest part of Port Hood. Ebenezer Leadbetter’s enormous three-storey house is a survivor from the age of coal, and proclaims the prosperity of immigrant miners with Danish and Bulgarian names among the Highland Scots. It is now a hotel.

Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Park. As a fishing port, military base and centre of commerce, Louisbourg briefly shared front rank importance in France’s overseas empire. Home to a transplanted European civilization, it flourished for less than half a century, and then it was extinguished by military conquest. None of its structures survived the next two centuries. In 1961, the Government of Canada began a $25 million project aimed at reconstructing approximately one-quarter of the original town and fortifications. Within this area the buildings, yards, gardens and streets are being recreated as they were during the 1740s, immediately preceding Louisbourg’s first siege. Almost all of the buildings on site are reconstructions built between the 1960s and 1980s, though many incorporate original foundations. Abandoned after 1760, Louisbourg became the only major colonial town without a modern city built on top of it.

Alfred Sisley Paris 1839-1899 Moret-sur-Loing The Banks of the Canal du Loing at Saint-Mammés 1888 Oil on canvas The Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley specialised in landscapes and river views. During the 1880s, he frequently painted Saint- Mammes, a village located where the Seine and Loing rivers meet. Writing to Monet in 1881, Sisley described the region saying – ‘It’s not a bad part of the world, rather a chocolate box landscape.’ In this picture, he presents a direct view of the canal banks using varied brushstrokes. Paul Cézanne Aix-en-Provence 1839-1906 La Vie des Champs (Life in the Fields), 1876-77 Oil on canvas Cézanne spent much of his life in his native Provence painting portraits, still-lifes, and landscapes. Independent in temperament and artistic outlook, he struggled to make his mark on the Paris art world. In the 1870s Camille Pissarro encouraged him to lighten his palette and paint outdoors. He went on to exhibit at the First and Third Impressionist exhibitions in 1874 and 1877. The first solo exhibition of Cézanne’s work, held by art- dealer Ambroise Vollard in 1895, marked a major turning point in the artist’s career. His innovative approach to representing three-dimensional objects in Space would have a significant impact on the development of Cubism. Cézanne painted this picture, first owned by Vollard, in Provence. It is a rural idyll rather than a depiction of a specific landscape or group of people. Claude Monet Paris 1840-1926 Giverny Argenteuil Basin with a Single Sailboat 1874 Oil on canvas From 1871-78, Monet lived in Argenteuil on the outskirts of Paris. During this time, he fitted out a boat as a floating studio and painted many views of the River Seine and its banks. He made this picture in 1874, the year that the first Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris. Monet has used distinct broken brushstrokes and complementary colours, to suggest light and movement. The shifting clouds, rippled water, autumn leaves, and gliding yacht further evoke a sense of transience. Most of the scene is composed of sky and reflections.

Peasant Wedding mocks the behaviour of peasants during a marriage feast. The painting evidently appealed to Brueghel’s clients, as he replicated it many times. Its attraction lies in its animated and amusing portrayal of Flemish peasants who are enjoying a country wedding. The bride looks down demurely at her dowry plate, as an old woman to her right grabs the money pouch from one of the guests. The figures are deliberately caricatured and comical.

In order to save the Christ Child, an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him to flee with his family to Egypt. This subject occupies only a small place in Rembrandt’s painting. The artist chose to place more emphasis on the mesmerising atmosphere of a hilly landscape at night, illuminated by multiple light sources. The painting is one of nine painted landscapes by Rembrandt and the only by night.
